Global warming, the big game, more - Bluefield Daily Telegraph

â€" â€" A selection of reader comments from our Facebook page last week:

On whether you think global warming is to blame for extreme weather events:

• No, global warming/climate change are just scare tactics to enact cap and trade. The truth is the change in weather is a naturally occurring event. Back in the 1970s, the same people who are promoting the global warming hoax warned of the coming ice age and it never happened â€" Jerri H.

• Keep your head buried in the sand there, I hope you like it there â€" Jeff S.

• Global warming is pure bull. Don’t believe it for one second â€" Kim P.

• To everything there is a season, man controls nothing. Earthquakes, they say, have changed the tilt of the earth on its axis. The sun, they say, has been more active with solar flares. Finally, they say, the orbit of the earth around the sun is not a round pattern, it’s oval, meaning in certain cycles (seasons) it would be closer to the sun. They say, “global warming.” I say, “To everything there is a season” â€" Kristie S.

• No â€" Jim H.

• No, it was this hot in 1936 â€" Linda C.

• Nope. Air conditioning has made modernized humans nothing but wimps. Myself included â€" Dale R.

• No. History has shown that this earth takes things in seasons over the decades; there have been many other times of droughts, high heat, or too much rain with flooding. What we have gone through with extreme weather over the past few years isn’t the first and won’t be the last. We just have to hang in there when it gets really tough. I would rather be right where I am, here in southern West Virginia, than to live where there are dangerous hurricanes! â€" Karen S.

On a story in which officials released details of a recent fatal police shooting:

• Good job West Virginia State Police! â€" Jeff S.

On the question of what is the bigger event â€" the Second Chance concert or the Beaver-Graham game?

• Seriously? The Beaver-Graham game has, is and will always be the most important event of the year. The concert is great for the area, but it has none of the cultural and historical significance of the big game â€" Michael W.

• I can tell you what is more family oriented and something everyone can enjoy â€" the football game. If I liked country music I would still never go to the concert because they allow drinking and people get way too drunk â€" Chrissy C.

On a story about a West Virginia man accused of enslaving and torturing his wife:

• This poor woman and her child are in my thoughts and prayers â€" Debby T.

• OMG. This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers are with this woman and her child â€" Ashley D.

On a poll question asking about your Olympic viewing habits:

• Avoid that channel â€" Greg B.

On Jaletta Albright Desmond’s first column since the tragic death of her daughter:

• What a wonderful article. I worked with you at WVVA and am just learning of your loss. Wishing you peace â€" Sheri W.

• Thanks Jaletta for sharing. Your story is so powerful and touching â€" Sara B.

• Jaletta, I emailed you some encouragement about a couple months ago, not expecting a reply. You have been in my prayers and thoughts, that each day will be less sad than the day before and you will be strengthened more each day. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts and feelings â€" Karen S.

On the demolition of Oakvale Elementary School:

• I graduated from this school and my kids went to school here. This picture really hits me in the heart. Many great teachers, aides and principals gave students not only a great education but taught us dignity, manners and respect for others â€" Gladys A.

• It’s sad to see it go, but it’s for the kids best education. My hubby really hates it. lol â€" Kim C.

On a video story about a Georgia girl who was forced to live in a chicken coop:

• At the end of the clip you have the man saying he and his neighbors were embarrassed over this. Really? Embarrassed? Why did he choose that word and not concern? Wow is all I can say â€" Carly M.

• I am not surprised by anything anymore! We are living in a time where parents are turning against their children and only caring about their own selves instead of their children. And because of that we shouldn’t be surprised if any of them grow up and choose to turn against those parents that abused them and kill them for that abuse! â€" Karen S.

On a video story about a man who went to the doctor for a kidney stone and found out he was a woman:

• Well now â€" Samuel B.

• Wow! â€" Michelle L.

• Well, there’s a fine howdy doo ... or lack there of I suppose â€" Paul L.
