Climate Change and Global Warming - Examiner.com

In the Congressional race in Washington's First District, candidate Laura Ruderman (D-Kirkland) has strong views on climate change and global warming.

"This starts with climate change. There is NO debate here. Every reputable scientist and organization in the world agrees that our planet is steadily and consistently warming. It's warming faster and more dramatically than ever before - not in the history of human kind, but in the history of the planet itself." - LauraRuderman.org

Examination of global temperatures shows that they peaked with an El Nino warming in 1998 and have been slightly lower and leveled out since then. On average, the planet warmed from 1850 through 1998, but despite continued CO2 production, the temperature has leveled out.

The global average temperature increased between 1850 and 1998 less than the typical increase in temperature between 6 am and 3 pm in the state of Washington. The increase in the average has been small and almost certainly smaller than the increase in temperature between the end of the last Ice Age and 1850.

Certainly, the earth's climate has been changing for millions of years and continues to change. But it is not warming faster than ever before in the history of the planet. Ruderman has policy positions based on this assertion. We must be skeptical of these policies as they are based on false understanding of our planet.
