Aerosmith return to rock Chicago on 'Global Warming' tour - Examiner.com

Aerosmith have returned from the recording studio and are now touring in support of their forthcoming album, "Music for Another Dimension," due out on August 28. They performed at Chicago's United Center on June 22, 2012 on the "Global Warming" tour. Despite the drama incurred by Steven Tyler's sudden addition to the American Idol cast in 2011, the band showed no lack of camaraderie on the stage.

Though they played a few songs from their forthcoming album, the show was a decadal survey of Aerosmith from 1973 through 1993's "Get a Grip." Opening with "Draw the Line," they immediately time-warped into "Love in an Elevator" followed by the unreleased "Oh Yeah." The first three tunes set the pace for the remainder of their show, as they constantly meandered through their enormous catalog.

The stage included a lengthy catwalk, Joe Perry and Steven Tyler emerged from the floor at the far end of the catwalk to begin the show. Perry had a lit cigarette in his mouth while Tyler was clad in white with a full length jacket and sun hat. They remained near the middle of the venue during the first two songs.

Tyler was energetic, quickly strutting the length of the catwalk with his fashionable microphone stand in tow. He even positioned himself prone to the stage, spreading his love to the stage floor.

Drummer Joey Kramer celebrated his 62nd birthday with a short drum solo after "Last Child." Though it didn't have the energy of a Neil Peart performance, it was a worthy nod at giving a solid drummer some due credit. He and bassist Tom Hamilton have been the backbone behind Aerosmith's bluesy sound for decades.

Tyler's voice has more scream than soul these days. The perfect balance of blues and hard rock that placed Aerosmith near the top of the rock landscape in the 70s transformed to hair metal in the 80s, and has remained that way since "Permanent Vacation." However, Tyler's vocals were solid; enduring in fact on "Last Child," "Mama Kin" and "Sweet Emotion."

In the end, they performed 17 songs over 100-minutes and left the stage after "Walk This Way." Aerosmith returned for a two song encore, with Steven Tyler again rising from below the stage playing "Dream On" on the piano. They finished, as they do with every show, with "Train Kept a Rollin'," a trademark track that underscores their storied career.
