Stop global warming, save polar bears - Exeter News-Letter

Opinion: Letter

June 12, 2012 2:00 AM

Editor's note: Students in Amy Steinberg's fifth-grade class at Kensington Elementary School wrote columns. Here is the sixth in a series of columns by the fifth-graders.

In 2008 polar bears were declared endangered. In 2011 the polar bear population was still dropping rapidly. Many factors are causing this terrible event. Some people don't follow the governments rules they still hunt the polar bears. Also, their habitat is melting. Their world is falling apart.

Did you know that if nothing improves polar bears will no longer exist in 2050? Global warming is melting their habitat. Where will they live? They will have to live in a warmer climate and polar bears are adapted to a colder climate, so every polar bear will perish.

To stop global warming to save the polar bears you can recycle every possible thing there is to recycle. For example: Our town recycles bottles, plastic, cans cardboard, etc. By recycling you could not have as much landfill to burn. You can reproduce the recycled products, but you can't reproduce the trash products so it keeps the earth colder and if people did not recycle the effects of global warming would increase then our earth would get really hot and polar bear's land would be melted.

Polar bears are getting pushed away from their home land because of human settlement. Eventually polar bears will have no land to live in because of human settlement.

We could save the polar bears land by reserving land that only polar bears can live on. Also there should be people that check on them every two months or more. Another idea of mine is someone should calculate the amount of polar bears now and then in one year, and then the next year etc. If the amount goes down in the polar bear population then we need solve the problem that is causing the death of the bears. We need to make a safer environment for the polar bears to live in.

People also hunt polar bears when it's a law not to. Polar bears are endangered and you should not hunt them. They're harmless creatures and they should not be abused. Often hunters want their fur and just leave the rest to rot. Why would you kill them just for their fur? Don't kill them at all!

Instead, use man-made materials for warmth. If you don't have money to buy man made materials then use down feathers. Down is a naturally shed layer of under feathers of geese, so the animals are not harmed.

If you cannot do any on these solutions to polar bear extinction then you can donate at www.PolarBearExtinction.com. Also if you're going to buy Coke, than buy the white can with the polar bears on it and it will donate the money to save the polar bears.

I don't want to see on the news polar bears extinct. Do you?
